Flag Day change and a tough start: What we can expect to see from Celtic’s 2023/24 fixtures

Celtic are about to find out their first 33 fixtures of the 2023/24 league season.

The SPFL will release the Premiership schedule at 9am on Friday, alongside the Championship, League 1 and League 2. (SPFL)

Next season’s top-flight will have Dundee back in the mix, in place of their city rivals Dundee United. The other 11 sides are unchanged.

So what can we expect to see in Celtic’s fixtures?

Well, our first match will almost certainly be at home. The league champions from the previous season traditionally play their opening fixture in front of their own fans.

It used to be the first game of the entire campaign, but that isn’t always the case now.

Last season our ‘Flag Day’ was a 4:30pm Sunday kick-off against Aberdeen. A Sunday start doesn’t seem likely this season.

Down south, Sky Sports will show three back-to-back Championship matches on Sunday 6 August. (Sky Sports)

With the broadcasters surely keen to avoid a clash, it seems like our opener is more likely to take place on Saturday. But don’t rule out a one-off Friday or Monday night slot.

In terms of who it could be against, who knows. It’s unlikely to be Aberdeen, Hearts, Hibernian or Rangers coming to town though. We’re due to face all four away from home in our opening round of fixtures.

Last season, they all visited Celtic Park first. The year before that we were sent to their grounds in the opening round. So expect to see a tough start for Celtic in tomorrow’s fixtures.

The Premiership season will begin on the weekend of August 5/6. The league will then stop for the winter break from January 3-19, while the final fixture is scheduled for May 18/19.

All being well, Celtic will be three-in-a-row champions by then.
