Celtic supporters are celebrating Fergus McCann today.
The Scottish-Canadian businessman stepped in to chaotic scenes in 1994. The club was in utter crisis, staring down the barrel of liquidation. Unlike other clubs, we never did get to that point, with McCann helping to save Celtic from the ignominy and embarrassment.
In March of that year, McCann announced to the Celtic faithful [New York Times]:
“I can now tell the fans that the club is safe.
“We have been able to resolve the critical short-term financing at Celtic, and shortly will be able to discuss long-term packaging.”
Still, it’s forgotten that McCann suffered image issues afterwards. For many, he was the catalyst behind Celtic becoming more corporate. His stadium redevelopments ended the Jungle era. There were and are a significant contingent who are not Fergus McCann fans, it’s fair to say.
Very few of that number, however, were on social media today. McCann is celebrating his 80th birthday, and for the first time in a long time, it was a club announcement that went well. Nearly 27 years after Fergus “saved” Celtic, the social media team at the club could breathe a sigh of relief and actually read the replies.

“We owe him everything”; Celtic supporters celebrate club saviour
Fergus McCann’s birthday was met with almost unanimous approval. Celtic supporters on Twitter were quick to offer their best wishes to the Bunnet.
Here are some of the best responses:
He saved our club. It would be good to have new custodians in place who have his vision and courage to take on the the football authorities. Sadly it appears we are silent while others abuse the rules. HH

The man who saved us, didn’t get the praise he deserved at the time, hopefully now people realise what we owe him, everything. 🍀🍀

Name that North Stand after the man & while you’re at it, name the training centre after Tommy Burns

Celtic man, clever businessman, stepped in, saved club from administration, made a tidy profit. The man personally doesn’t want a statue or a stand named after him, that’s why it hasn’t happened.

And, for a laugh, here are two excellent responses to a particular photo of Fergus:
That first model of the stadium is terrible, glad they had a rethink and made it bigger.
