Former Celtic boss Gordon Strachan makes bold Rangers claim
Former Celtic manager Gordon Strachan might be a little biased.
After all, he had his own spell in charge, and he’s the father of coach Gavin Strachan. Still, the former Scotland boss is never shy to give the odd strong opinion.
Upon leaving the national team, Strachan wondered aloud if genetics were to blame for the nation’s qualifying mishaps (BBC). So he has previous when it comes to hot takes.
Just as well he has a platform then. At the moment, that platform is the Football Pass Show. Despite Celtic trailing Rangers in the Premiership, the former Bhoys manager claimed that their squad is far better.
“I believe when they play – the stats, using my eyes, everybody knows it – Celtic are a far better team.”
Ex-Celtic boss Gordon Strachan’s comments in context
It might seem an outrageous claim to some. However, Celtic’s squad from 19-20 isn’t radically different to the personnel at the club now.
There’s international talent there, with Kristoffer Ajer surely a future Norway captain, Odsonne Edouard, Diego Laxalt and Mohammed Elyounoussi. And that’s not even mentioning the host of Scotland internationals at Celtic’s disposal.
Talking about the season in general, Strachan made some interesting points:
“It’s up to the Celtic people to drag themselves back.
“There was an opportunity in the last couple of games. But they’ve had draws. They could’ve got a couple of points closer, that’s for sure.
“But, because of the circumstances, they’ve played games of football without major players. And you need your major players – especially up front where you’ve got four of your strikers missing, including your two top ones Edouard and Griffiths.”
Celtic have better personnel, perhaps Rangers are better coached
Maybe, then, the difference is coaching.
Could a more adaptable, forward-thinking manager have led this exact squad to 10IAR? In my view, yes. I’m sure a lot of the Celtic support would agree with that sentiment.
Rangers’ squad is perhaps more balanced. There’s competition in every position, and the Gers have made smart signings. Glen Kamara, Borna Barisic and Conor Goldson are all examples of that.
However, it’s difficult to argue with Gordon Strachan. Man-for-man, Celtic have an impressive squad. It’s just that current management haven’t got the best out of the players we have.
And at the end of the season, that’s what’ll have made the difference.
