Celtic have some interesting examples of former players who turn to management once their career on the field comes to an end.

Admittedly, it can feel a little strange seeing heroes of yesteryear enter the dugout. Nevertheless, there is always plenty of intrigue when it does happen.

Former Celtic captain Scott Brown is the latest Hoops hero to try his hand as a number one. He is currently enjoying life in charge of Ayr United, who sit top of the Scottish Championship, albeit having played two more games than Falkirk at this stage.

Despite harbouring aspirations of one day returning to Glasgow, the 39-year-old has indicated that he will need to ‘earn’ the position due to the size of the Bhoys and the relentless demand for success.

Now, his work in Ayrshire has attracted interest from elsewhere in the Scottish Premiership as his prowess in the hot seat gains deserved recognition.

Scott Brown discussed as St Johnstone managerial candidate

According to The Daily Record, Brown has been discussed for the St Johnstone managerial vacancy alongside Aberdeen coach Peter Leven and Larne’s Tiernan Lynch.

The Saints are on the lookout for a Craig Levein replacement after cutting ties with the former Scotland boss and their hierarchy are now focused on narrowing down their shortlist for the position.

Candidates from south of the border and around Europe have also been profiled, with the hope being that St Johnstone can formally begin their interview process later this week.

Someone who operates within an attacking philosophy is believed to be the preferential type of manager they would like to steer them forward.

Brown would most certainly fit that bill, seeing that his Ayr side have scored 15 goals across their opening five Scottish Championship fixtures, averaging three strikes a game.

However, it would be intriguing to see if the Celtic icon would be tempted to leave his project at Somerset Park, seeing as his side are shaping up as a potential promotion contender this term.

No matter what happens surrounding his future, Brown is sure to be someone to keep an eye on in the coming years as he establishes himself in the coaching circuit.
