Former Celtic captain Charlie Mulgrew could be ruled out of a Paradise return with Dundee United at the weekend.
In the Tangerines’ loss to Hibs last night, Mulgrew was taken off after just 17 minutes [Courier]. He was replaced by Mark Reynolds, who later gave away a penalty as United were seen off by Jack Ross and co.
Marc McNulty could also miss out. Meanwhile, Benjamin Siegrist, Logan Chalmers and Liam Smith have all suffered injuries early in the season.
It’s a significant blow to Tam Courts and his team, ahead of what should be a tough test for Dundee United.
With Celtic on rampant home form, it was a difficult enough task. Missing the calming leadership of Mulgrew, however, could make it a bridge too far.
Mulgrew made 208 appearances for Celtic over two spells [Transfermarkt]. Having come through the Bhoys Academy set-up, the versatile defender had spells with Dundee United (a first time), Wolves, Southend and Aberdeen before returning home.
While at Celtic, he won five titles, two Scottish Cups and a League Cup. He was also named PFA Scotland Player of the Year in 2012 [BBC].
Dundee United task made more difficult without Charlie Mulgrew against Celtic
So central to Tam Courts’ team, as Scott Brown is to Stephen Glass’ Celtic, Mulgrew is another player enjoying increased responsibility at an SPFL club.
However, it remains to be seen just how serious this latest injury will be.
Brought off before 20 minutes had even passed, the 35-year-old still has plenty of stamina, but playing twice a week is a big ask for the veteran ex-Scotland international.

Potentially losing McNulty is also a significant blow. Admittedly, the Reading loanee hasn’t scored in Tangerine yet this season. However, the striker is always one to watch, as proven with both Hibs and Dundee United in games against Celtic.
Postecoglou’s men have plenty of their own injury concerns, of course. New Head of Sports Science Anton McElhone will be busy assessing the injury woes of the Bhoys’ first team.
Yet, after last night’s display, it’s clear there’s depth in this Celtic squad.
It’s a shame to think Mulgrew might not get an on-pitch reception from the Hoops faithful on Sunday. A consistent and committed Celtic player in his time, he deserves some acclaim.
