Former Celtic duo set to be reunited in the Bundesliga this weekend

Former Celtic duo Josip Juranovic and Moritz Jenz are set to be reunited this weekend when Union Berlin take on Schalke in the Bundesliga.

The defensive pairing played a major part in the opening half of the 2022/23 campaign, both playing all six of the Bhoys UEFA Champions League fixtures.

In Juranovic’s case, he had an even bigger impact over the last 18 months, helping Ange Postecoglou’s side to a League and Cup double last season.

However, in the January transfer window, both players’ times at Parkhead were brought to a close.

Following impressive showings for Celtic and also at the World Cup in Qatar, Juranovic attracted the interest of clubs from across Europe.

And he eventually made the move to join Bundesliga side Union Berlin, who currently sit 2nd in the league, for a fee in the region of £10 million.

Moritz’s Jenz time at Celtic also ended after his loan stay from French side Lorient was cut short as the defender went on the hunt for more regular first-team football.

The German made a move back to his homeland, joining Schalke, who currently sit at the other end of the top-flight, rock bottom of the league.

Both ex-Celtic players have made positive starts to their time in Germany, with Juranovic picking up two assists and Jenz keeping three clean sheets in his first three games.

This evening, the Croatan right-back will even get another shot at Europe as Union take on Ajax in the first knockout rounds of the Europa League.

And when the duo get back to league action with their respective clubs, there is a chance they will see a familiar face on the opposition.

This Sunday, Union Berlin will host bottom side Schalke as they aim to continue their surprise title push of Bayern Munich in second place.

1st and 2nd place in the Bundesliga will take on one another in just over a week’s time. So, it is crucial that Juranovic and his teammates keep up their strong form.

But, his former Celtic teammate, Moritz Jenz, will be looking to do all he can to stop Union, as Schalke look to try and make what seemed like an unlikely escape.

Jenz has an impressive record in his first three games, having not conceded a goal. So he will be out to keep a fourth clean sheet in a row.

I am sure both men are looking forward to being reunited this weekend after a brilliant first half of the season spent together at Parkhead.

Celtic supporters will be looking forward to seeing the two exchange in conversation before and after the game. I am sure there will also be a few social media posts.

During the 90 minutes on Sunday, though, that friendship will be forgotten about as the two sides fight it out for important points at the top and bottom of the league
