Former Celtic man Barry Robson set to earn Premiership opportunity

Outside of Celtic and Rangers, the Aberdeen job is one of the most high-profile of Scottish football.

Many would regard the Pittodrie club as a sleeping giant of our domestic game. Certainly, it could be argued that with their resources at the time Rangers were moping around in the lower leagues, they underachieved by only winning the League Cup back in 2013. That was the Dons’ first major honour in the game since 1996 when they won the same competition.

Obviously, it should be mentioned that they have come up against a Celtic side that has been imperious this last decade but when you take into account that St Johnstone managed a cup double just two seasons ago, I would say that they have certainly not challenged enough for a club of their size.

After Derek McInnes left, the experiment that was Stephen Glass lasted just 42 games and he was dismissed just shy of a calendar year in the job with a 35% win rate.

Up stepped Jim Goodwin who is a well-respected manager and he suffered the same fate as Glass. Sacked just short of his first anniversary at the club with a slightly improved win rate of just under 40%.

Former Celtic midfielder, Barry Robson was put in interim charge of Aberdeen and it is fair to say he has done an outstanding job at Pittodrie. Flirting with relegation, Robson has helped drag Aberdeen up to fourth place and has the club facing the very real prospect of qualifying for European football.

He has been victorious in four of his six games in charge in a run that included the 3-0 demolition of Scotland’s so-called third-biggest club, Hearts. And according to Aberdeen Live, he is set to be offered the chance to lead the Dons until the end of the season in a move that will be popular amongst the Aberdeen fans.

Should Robson be offered the Aberdeen job long-term?

It’s too early to say. The former Celt has done a sterling job so far but I would imagine that the Aberdeen chairman, Dave Cormack will not want to get his fingers burned again after getting his first two appointments wrong.

He has to get the next one right.

All Robson can do is keep doing what he is doing and if it’s not the Aberdeen job he gets, I am sure there will be plenty of other suitors come the end of the season.
