Former Celtic man Charlie Mulgrew enjoyed a distinguished playing career and is now ready to apply his wisdom in the coaching circuit.
Following his retirement from playing, we told that the 38-year-old undertook his UEFA Pro License course alongside Hoops’ B team assistant Jonny Hayes and new Under-18 manager Adam Asghar.
Mulgrew was also linked to the Celtic Under-18 vacancy at the time; however, he has since taken a post at Hamilton Academical in the same capacity, providing a stable start to his career in the dugout at a club with a reputable academy set-up.
Time is flying, and it is surreal to see your former heroes in coaching roles when, not so long ago, they were critical players for the Bhoys during past glories.
As I reminisce, Mulgrew has opened up on some of the motivations behind his new journey and what he hopes to impart to youngsters vying to make the grade in professional football.
Charlie Mulgrew discusses his coaching motivations
Expanding on his strong passion for nurturing the next generation of stars, Mulgrew stated on his new role [Daily Record]: “It’s given me a huge motivation, though, to have a group of players that I can understand how they are feeling, and we can address that and say you know what? There’s nothing you can do.
“It’s there, and there is no getting away from it, but for me, as a leader, I just want to see you playing football the way you did in the school playground.

“I’ve got a strong passion for the coaching and management side that I want to pass experience, that knowledge and emotional intelligence on to players, and let them understand that I know what they are going through, and let them play with freedom within a structure and how I see the game.”
You get the impression Mulgrew is choking to get started in his new surroundings, calling on a rich array of experiences from his own playing days that can help to offer solutions in times of need to his talented group at Hamilton.
Coaching isn’t an exact science and is reliant on adaptability to overcome adversity. As a seasoned veteran of Scottish football, there are few scenarios he hasn’t sampled throughout his time on the pitch.
Stepping into an exciting new career path, it is only right to wish Mulgrew all the best in his future endeavours. You never know, he may pitch up at Celtic again one day!
