Former Celtic man Mark Fotheringham is again on the lookout for a new coaching gig after his short spell with Hertha Berlin came to an end.

Fotheringham linked up with legendary German boss Felix Magath back in March as they attempted to halt the rapid decline of Hertha into the second division. They joined Hertha with the club having yet to have won a game in 2022.

However, ex-Hoops midfielder Fotheringham played his part in securing big wins over Hoffenheim, Augsburg, and Stuttgart respectively. He then helped overcome Hamburg in the relegation playoff clash too in what was a huge success for him.

But his partnership with Magath in Berlin has now come to an end with their contracts having expired. Magath has already confirmed that his job there is done too [Sky Sport].

For Fotheringham then, it opens up the question of where he’ll go to next. And he’s already delivered his own view on what would be his next dream job. Indeed, he wants to manage an English club and implement a German style of playing [The Courier].

It comes after he also had a stint with Ingolstadt as an assistant manager in which he helped lead them up to the second division. Fotheringham also had a short stint as a player in Germany with Freiburg between 2005 and 2006.

Mark Fotheringham slowly building a solid reputation as next role awaits

It’ll be interesting to see what his time with Hertha Berlin will do for his career. It was his first spell coaching in the Bundesliga, albeit as a number 2. Given he’s ready to become a number 1, a drop-down is almost certain.

But he’s cut his teeth well over the years and has built a fine reputation. He can now look back on promotion success as well as helping keep a team up in one of Europe’s biggest leagues. It would be fascinating to see how well he would do as a manager.

It’s worth remembering that Fotheringham is only 38 years of age too. He has plenty of time to reach the top levels of the game, and given his experiences so far, there’s no reason he shouldn’t be reaching for that.

Before his time with Hertha, he was linked with a role as Neil Lennon’s assistant at Omonia Nicosia [Scottish Sun]. In addition to that, he was quoted as saying he would be interested in becoming the Dunfermline Athletic boss [Scottish Sun].

He has a right to feel his stock has risen further since then. Working under Magath will also do wonders for his career prospects. But as of yet, there’s no real indication as to what league he’ll have to settle for.

There’s undoubtedly promise and excitement regarding Fotheringham’s managerial career. Hopefully we start to see him branch out on his own in his next role.
