Two former Celtic icons are in the running to replace Malky Mackay at Scottish Premiership side Ross County.

The Scottish Daily Mail [16/11 print edition, back page] reports that Neil Lennon is open to speaking to the Highland side, who currently sit 11th in the table and have work to do to steer themselves clear of relegation.

Scott Brown, who left Fleetwood Town earlier in the season, is amongst a raft of names also reported by the paper to be in the frame for the position alongside Callum Davidson, Neil Warnock and John Hughes.

Don Cowie has been placed in temporary charge of County but club chairman Roy MacGregor wants a new man in permanent charge by the time they play Kilmarnock in league action on November 25th.

Celtic don’t play County again until January 27th so they will be well into their new era by the time they visit Glasgow and it would interesting to see either Lennon or Brown in the opposition dugout.

Former Celtic boss Lennon has been out of management work since leaving Cypriot side Omonia in 2022. He guided them to a national cup win and the group stages of the UEFA Europa League but was let go after difficult league form.

Brown meanwhile had a solid rookie season as a manager at Fleetwood, consolidating their position in English League One and guiding them to their best FA Cup run ever. However, a difficult start to the 2023/24 ensured a sharp exit.

Either appointment could be successful for County. Lennon has a proven track record in Scottish football, while Brown has potential as a club leader and is a born winner.

There’s plenty of time left in the season to push the Highlanders up the table, too. While they are in 11th, only nine points separate 3rd from bottom. It’s a dogfight of a league this term and both former Celtic men would be up for the fight.
