Youssouf Mulumbu’s future finally looks like it’s going to involve a new club, after being without one for the first half of the new season.
Mulumbu was a huge disappointment at Celtic during his year in Glasgow. The Congolese midfielder made only three appearances in the first half of last season. He then joined Kilmarnock for the second half of it before being released in the summer.

It couldn’t have been any more of a failure of a spell for him. Yet, despite some productive displays for Killie during that second half of the campaign, Mulumbu didn’t manage to find a club in the summer.
But he looks ready to change all of that now. Posting on social media today, on transfer deadline day no less, Mulumbu stated that he was ready for a return:
Scottish clubs should be queuing up for him
Mulumbu, if he can get match-fit, would be a terrific signing for a club in Scotland outside of ourselves. He may not have made it at Celtic, but he’s tailor-made for the Scottish Premiership.
He’s all about his strength and ball-retention. Another key role he has is in breaking up play, something he consistently did at Kilmarnock during his spells there.
You could pluck any other Scottish Premiership side outside of Celtic and he would do a job for them. It’s not as if he wouldn’t be open to it either. Mulumbu said as recently as last month that he would never close the door to a Scotland return (Scottish Sun).

At Celtic, some would maybe argue that Mulumbu wasn’t given enough opportunities. He put in a solid enough debut in our 2-1 defeat at Rugby Park back in September 2018. He followed that up with a decent performance in a 3-1 loss in Salzburg. However, he would only go on to make one more cameo appearance against RB Leipzig.
Yet the fact is that he was a tad too slow for what we were hoping to achieve as a football team. He’s all about the battle, and whilst we do still lack someone like that, Mulumbu never managed to prove himself to be capable of competing for a regular place in our squad.
He deserves to find a new club soon. His talents are wasted by sitting on the unsigned list. It’ll be interesting to see whether he makes a Scotland return or not.
