Former Celtic prospect named on L'Equipe list of best youngsters in the world
Former Celtic youngster Aaron Hickey has been named on L’Equipe’s Top 50 list of the best young players in the world.
To qualify for the list, players had to have been born in 2001 or after.
Hickey ranks at 45th ahead of prospects from Ajax, Lyon and Independiente.
The Hickey part of the article from L’Equipe starts, frustratingly for Celtic fans, with: “Celtic surely missed a great player.”
The left-back was on the books at Celtic as a young teenager before making the switch to Hearts in pursuit of first-team football.
He found it at Tynecastle and quickly became a regular in the Scottish Premiership.
Celtic, perhaps realising their error, were said by Craig Levein to have made multiple bids to bring him back to Celtic Park [BBC].
However, Hickey chose to make the switch to Bologna. He’s already made ten Serie A appearances and is still just 18 years old.
You’d say at this point he’s made a sound decision and L’Equipe clearly think he’s going to go on and have a class career.
Is he one who got away from Celtic too quickly? Should our coaching staff has seen something in him before he moved to Hearts?
Sadly, we’ll likely never find out if he could have made it at Celtic Park or not.
