Former Celtic star explains what makes Cameron Carter-Vickers so good

Moritz Jenz has offered an interesting insight on Celtic defender Cameron Carter-Vickers.

The German was a centre-back partner for the American on many occasions last season. Jenz soon departed Celtic as his game time decreased while Carter-Vickers has continued to be an important performer for us.

The big defensive colossus was arguably our most important player over the two Ange Postecoglou seasons. Yet, Carter-Vickers isn’t flashy. He rarely performs media duties or posts on social media. As a result, the Celtic support still doesn’t know a whole lot about him.

Jenz has offered some good insight in that regard, in a fresh interview with the Scottish Sun. With Carter-Vickers only just returning to first-team action following injury, he was an obvious topic of conversation.

“CCV is a great guy,” Jenz said. “First of all, he’s not selfish. He’s a top, team player.

“You saw him come on against Lazio and you could see his presence. Everyone was like, ‘CCV is here!’. It was very stable. Okay, the goal they conceded was a bit unlucky where Cameron could have kicked it out, but this can happen.

“But he is so important. It’s like having a rock, or a fridge, next to you.

“You know he’s going to be there and will cover you when someone goes past you. He’s always very safe and assured. Cam’s not a big talker during games. He leads more by actions, which is also good.

“There were some players who liked to talk more. I don’t want to mention any names — Greg Taylor. No, I’m joking. It’s good to see CCV back.”

There are a few interesting takeaways from Jenz’s comments. First of all, it’s no surprise to hear that players feel safe when they’re alongside Carter-Vickers. That’s exactly how supporters feel too.

It must boost every player’s confidence when CCV is involved. You know that there’s a fair chance he’ll be there if required.

It’s also interesting to hear that he’s not particularly vocal while matches are going on. As previously mentioned, that’s pretty in keeping with how he acts off the pitch. But it just goes to show that you don’t need to rant and rave to be a good footballer.

He’s just a steady, calm, reassuring presence at the heart of the defence. It would be great for him to get fully up to speed over the coming weeks and become a huge part of the side once again.
