Former Celtic striker Vakoun Bayo is enjoying life in Belgium after leaving the Bhoys last summer, becoming an “essential” part of the Royal Charleroi SC attack.
Bayo actually left Glasgow on a permanent basis to sign for Gent before running into the same lack of selection problems that plagued his spell at Celtic.
In fairness to the Ivorian, he was again proactive in finding a new club to get regular football, moving to Charleroi on loan in the same division back in January after just a few months.
Since then he’s found a real burst of scoring form, netting 11 goals in 16 matches in the second half of the season.
That’s prompted Charleroi to activate a purchase clause in his contract and sign him up to a four-year deal until the summer of 2026.
A statement on their website read: “Bayo has become an essential element of the club’s attack. It had become obvious that Sporting de Charleroi had to exercise its option to buy linked to the six-month loan.
“The staff, the management, the players and the whole big Sporting family are delighted with the extension of Vakoun Bayo’s stay under our colours and wish him every success for the rest of his adventures.”
Bayo never looked like the right fit at Celtic but it is nice to see him land on his feet elsewhere.
Hopefully, this will now be a permanent destination for the player to build his career around.
Still just 25, he has plenty of time to make his mark on the continent and progress after his fine scoring form in Belgium this season.
