Recent Celtic target Edson Alvarez looks set to make a big-money switch to Ajax this summer.
The 21-year-old is reportedly close to completing a move to last year’s Champions League semi-finalists. Dutch outlet De Telegraaf reports that a “verbal agreement” has been made between Ajax and the defender’s current side Club America.

They say that the deal equates to $17million (£13.6million) and although things are yet to be formally agreed, a deal is close. Mexican international Alvarez is expected to sign a four-year deal with the Dutch champions.

Celtic were interested in Alvarez
It’s not so long ago that Celtic were seriously interested in Alvarez. Just last month, ESPN Deportes reported that the Hoops had a bid rejected for the player in December.
The report stated that Celtic had a bid of $6.5million (£5.2million) turned down by America as it didn’t meet their asking price. The report also linked Ajax with Alvarez at the time so it seems pretty fair to suggest that Celtic did make their move for the young talent.

It must be encouraging for Celtic fans to see the club still looking far and wide for targets. We’ve signed the likes of Emilio Izaguirre and Efrain Juarez from Central America in recent years and it’s good to see the club trying to continue that trend.
The report also shows that Celtic are identifying top quality players, and although we failed with Alvarez, we’re also keen to splash out some money.
