Many Celtic supporters remember Jonathan Gould as part of a successful period in the club’s history. Few will realise the former Hoops goalkeeper is now helping prepare New Zealand for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

What may be less well known is that Gould has gone on to build one of the most impressive coaching careers of any ex-Celtic player.

Gould is currently New Zealand’s goalkeeping coach and has played a role in helping the All Whites reach the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

It is an achievement that deserves far more recognition among the Celtic support.

Jonathan Gould has become an important figure in New Zealand football

After his playing career ended, Gould moved into coaching and steadily established himself within New Zealand football. His reputation led to his appointment as New Zealand Football’s Goalkeeping Development Manager, a role that saw him help shape goalkeeper development across the country.

That position highlighted the trust placed in Gould’s knowledge and experience.

Rather than working solely with senior professionals, he became involved in developing the next generation of goalkeepers throughout the national pathway.

The former Celtic goalkeeper is heading to the World Cup

Gould’s work eventually earned him a place within the All Whites coaching setup in 2022. Since then, he has been part of the national team’s backroom staff and remains New Zealand’s goalkeeping coach under Darren Bazeley.

His contribution has coincided with one of the biggest moments in modern New Zealand football. The All Whites have secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, their first appearance at the tournament since 2010.

Players often receive the headlines when a nation reaches a World Cup, but coaching staffs play a huge role behind the scenes. Gould has been part of that journey from the touchline and training ground.

For Celtic supporters, it is a reminder that some former players continue to make a significant impact long after leaving Parkhead.

Gould’s post-Celtic coaching career has taken him onto the international stage, and helping prepare a World Cup-bound nation is an accomplishment worthy of genuine admiration.
