Former Celtic youngster Liam Burt has been handed a big opportunity to impress at Aberdeen after being invited for a trial.

Burt signed for the Hoops in the summer of 2019 after leaving Rangers, but only stayed at Lennoxtown for a year before moving on in the summer.

After departing, the midfielder stated that manager Neil Lennon actually liked him as a player and had praised him on several occasions during his time at the club (Glasgow Times).

However, it looks like he’s set for a fresh start as he looks to impress Dons manager Derek McInnes. McInnes has been speaking about why he was invited to watch their game against Hamilton last night, as he confirmed the player is being brought in for both parties to have a look at each other.

As quoted by the Daily Record, McInnes said: “We just invited Liam to come and train. He will train with the development squad over the next few days and we will have a look at him.

“Because we knew we had a couple of practice matches coming up we thought it was a chance to get him in to have a look and for him to have a look at us. It’s not more than that.”

Burt could do with finding a home soon

In order for Burt to continue his development, the midfielder really needs to find himself a permanent home soon. He won’t want to be stuck in limbo this season and unable to progress as a player.

Given he’s now 21, he’s at an age where his focus should be on playing regularly. Spending a vast period of time looking for another club will do absolutely nothing for him.

Celtic are of course due to face Aberdeen in a crucial domestic double-header. The Hoops travel to Pittodrie in Premiership action on Sunday before facing them again in the Scottish Cup semi-finals a week later.

But don’t expect Burt to be anywhere near the Dons midfield for either of them. It’s more than likely he’ll still be carrying out his trial, and even if he does sign, McInnes has stronger options at his disposal in the engine room.

His main focus will simply be on winning a contract. The youngster has always had good technique, and the Granite City looks like the ideal place on paper for him to continue his development.

Hopefully it works out, it’s certainly taking longer for him to find a club than many would’ve expected.

In other news, we talk about why it’s time Lennon gives a forgotten midfielder more minutes on the pitch.
