Former Celtic youth player Barry Hepburn is set to sign a new contract extension at Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.
According to the Daily Record, the Scotland u19 international has been impressing ever since leaving Celtic to join the Germans back in August 2020.
Two years ago Hepburn was promoted from the Bayern u17 side and moved to their u19 set up. Since then he has scored for the Germans in their 2-0 win over Inter Milan in the UEFA Youth League.
Hepburn became the third Scot in Bayern’s history to sign for the club after joining up with another former Celt, Liam Morrison who signed for them just over four years ago. Both have followed Alan McInally’s footsteps who joined them in 1989.
Speaking about his move, Hepburn revealed in November just how much he is enjoying life and the differences between the game in Scotland and Germany.
Hepburn said [The Sun], “I’ve been there for over two years now. It is a lot more physical over there so I had to bulk up a lot. This season I feel I have come on a lot and I’m enjoying it.
“The main difference between Scotland and Germany is the physicality. You also need to be a lot more consistent and disciplined. I feel I have matured on and off the pitch. You cannot mess about over there. It is 100 percent all the time or nothing.”
Celtic have had a raft of youngsters look to move on and seek pastures new. Ben Doak is shining at Liverpool and it is good to see another former Celt in Hepburn do well at his new club.
Let’s just hope that the emergence of Rocco Vata is the start of players trickling through into the Celtic first team from the youth ranks.
