Ex-Celtic midfielder Liam Henderson’s chances of promotion with Verona are slim after being defeated last night.
The Scot’s Serie B club lost to Cittadella in the first leg of their promotion play-off.
A win would have put them in the driver’s seat for the return leg.
However, Verona were defeated by two goals to nil and Henderson didn’t play the full 90 minutes.
Liam Henderson unlucky with promotion
This will be the second time Henderson has had promotion in the tips of his fingers.
With Hibs, despite a fantastic cup-winning season, they were unable to get into the Premiership.
Now, over in Italy, Henderson only had two more games with Verona to reach Serie A. His side defeated Pescara in the first play-offs and were drawn in the final with Cittadella who sit lower down the league than them.
It was a Davide Daw masterclass that saw the hosts take the comfortable lead into the next leg.
He opened the scoring on six minutes and sealed the tie on 80 minutes.
Only four minutes later, Henderson was substituted and didn’t see out the full 90.
Barring a miracle, Henderson and Verona will spend another season in the second tier of Italian football.
Will that change is mindset and will he look for a return to the UK?
Liam Henderson coming home?
After two stints in Italy, it may come to a point that Henderson wants to come back.
Celtic are so full that even his younger brother Ewan would be ahead in the pecking order.
However, there are a whole host of teams that would have him.
Not just in Scotland but England would be crying out to have a silky midfielder like Henderson.
He will be aware that he has many options back home.
That said, everyone wishes him luck on Sunday to pull off the mightiest of comebacks.
