Former cup final winner Murdo MacLeod tips Celtic for Hampden glory
Celtic have not won that many Betfred/League Cup Finals over Rangers in the last 40 years. In fact, they have only won two – in 1982, and in 2009. The Hoops have a chance to win a third final against their bitter rivals on Sunday.
One player who knows that it is like to win a league cup final over Rangers is Murdo MacLeod. The former Hoops midfielder scored for the Hoops in their 2-1 win over the Ibrox side in the 1982 final.
Now MacLeod has made his prediction for the 2019. He believes that Celtic will win the final, but not only that: the victory will propel the Hoops to nine in a row.
“The better squad”
“If both of them play as well as they can then Celtic have the better squad” he said, as reported by the Herald.
“If Celtic play I think they will win the cup and go on and win the league this season” he concluded.
MacLeod’s thoughts will probably be echoed by the vast majority of the Celtic support. If the Hoops play as well as they can, then there is only going to be one winner at Hampden Park.
Huge psychological advantadge should Hoops win
It might be too early to suggest that if Celtic win the cup final they will automatically go on to win the league. However, it would be a huge psychological advantage if Celtic defeat Rangers for the second time this season.
Yes, people will say that anything can happen in a cup final and that form goes out of the window. However, Celtic have the better players, and that is even if Odsonne Edouard misses the game. The Hoops are also in a great run of form, having won 11 games in a row.
With that in mind, it is easy to see where MacLeod is coming from. The Hoops are more than good enough to prove his Hampden Park prediction correct.
