Former Rangers defender Graham Roberts’ ridiculous Celtic rant

Former Rangers defender Graham Roberts went on an unsurprisingly bitter ramble about Celtic on Betfred TV.

The loud-mouthed ex-Ibrox man had a pop at our achievements (surprise surprise) as well as the tiresome idea that teams don’t try as hard against us as they do vs Rangers.

It was a clear sign of how Celtic have broken certain elements of the Ibrox fanbase over the last eight years. As the Hoops’ success continues to grow and grow, the bitterness emanating from Govan continues to do likewise.

If you didn’t see Roberts’ ludicrous rant, here it is below on Betfred TV’s Twitter account:

In the video, Roberts says the following:

“My worry is, I watch a lot of the games, when Celtic play Aberdeens and all of them, they don’t put as much effort in against Celtic. Trust me. When they play Rangers, they double their energies. I hope all the teams give everything against both teams.

“How can you say it’s nine-in-a-row? Rangers haven’t been in the league for five years – I don’t get all that. Rangers have been in the league for the last three years, we don’t go nine. They won’t get it anyway.”

A battle we’ll forever be fighting

Roberts isn’t hitting out with anything we haven’t heard before. He just smacks of a bitter, bitter man who simply can’t take the beatings Celtic have dished out to his old side over the years.

Once again, that Rangers arrogance of nothing counting whilst they were out of the league has shined through. It’s almost as if he’s getting his excuse ready for when Celtic win the 10. He also tries to extend how long Rangers were out of the league.

Let’s get one thing straight. Rangers should’ve been up in three years. That they weren’t is on them and nobody else. Spending two years in the Championship was an absolute embarrassment, and it was down to their woeful recruitment more than anything.

They’ve also been in the league for the last three seasons. Funnily enough, in those three seasons Celtic have scooped domestic trebles. It’s not as if things have been much harder in those times.

And of course Roberts also comes out with the tired old chestnut of teams not trying against Celtic. It’s funny how he failed to give a convincing argument for why that may be. Are we to believe that the likes of Derek McInnes, Jack Ross, and Steve Robinson are all going “right boys, it’s Celtic today, so mind to try and tone down the effort”.

Then again, I question the point of my own rebuttal too. After all, it’s not as if a certain element on the other side are even open to common sense. Roberts falls into that category.
