France under-21 boss Sylvain Ripoll has heaped the praise on Celtic forward Odsonne Edouard.

The former Toulouse man has been in terrific form for the Hoops so far this season but his goalscoring record at international level has been even better. Edouard has struck six goals in three games for the French youth side and is now regarded as Ripoll’s top forward in his new look team.

And the 48-year-old knows exactly what he’s getting from Edouard as he gave a pretty accurate summary of his strengths prior to their next match against Slovakia on Tuesday.

“Odsonne is very efficient, very effective with Celtic, and he has this pace with us,” Ripoll told the Daily Record.

“And he has continued that form at his club with us when he comes with us on the Under 21s.

“He has an incredible pace and has the happy habit of scoring goals at important moments in the game for club and country.

“Odsonne has improved enormously for his club and has been playing every week almost.”

Ripoll knows Edouard very well

Celtic fans can certainly vouch for Ripoll’s assessment on Edouard’s big game record. Perhaps the greatest accolade you can give the Frenchman is that he saves his very best moments for when it matters most.

Edouard has scored more goals against Rangers than any other team in Scotland bar Hearts and Motherwell. He quite often saves his best moments for those games against our own rivals plus crucial cup finals and European matches.

Much has been made about his comparison with Rangers forward Alfredo Morelos. The players’ scoring records are pretty identical but the difference is that Edouard always seems to deliver in the big games whereas Morelos only does it now and again.

The fact that he has started his France under-21 career so positively only goes to highlight that further. Edouard will be in Ripoll’s side for the away qualifier against Slovakia on Tuesday night and you really wouldn’t bank against him netting a fourth successive brace.
