Former Celtic great Frank McAvennie expects Neil Lennon to add to his coaching staff in the coming weeks. Lennon is yet to make any additions to his backroom staff since being appointed manager of the club at the end of May.

When the Northern Irishman was named as Brendan Rodgers’ successor, it was also announced that John Kennedy and Damien Duff would continue to work alongside him. Kennedy’s official title is assistant manager while Irishman Duff is a first-team coach.

That team may have worked well together in the closing months of last season but McAvennie still thinks Lennon will be looking for another addition.

He told the Scottish Sun: “I’d expect Neil to try to get in his own man to work alongside him next season.

“John Kennedy and Damien Duff are both very good at what they do, but I think Lenny will want someone else to bounce ideas off.

“Things should start to happen this week now that everyone is back.”

Is there space?

Lennon is clearly keen to bring someone else to compliment the current set-up. In recent weeks he has reportedly been interested in bringing in both Garry Parker and Henrik Larsson to help. Neither move materialised though and Lennon is still searching.

The trio of Lennon, Kennedy and Duff did seem to work relatively well in the closing stages of the season although the Celtic boss may want someone he already has a relationship with.

Trust is crucial at a big club like Celtic. If Lennon is happy with his setup then we’re more likely to see results on the pitch.
