South Melbourne FC have had a lot of pride to take from across the world this season.

Not only did one of their club icons, Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou, take Scottish football by storm but another of their former charges is now a Europa League champion.

Socceroo Ajdin Hrustic was an Eintracht Frankfurt penalty hero last night, one of five players to stick away their efforts past Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor on the way to a famous shoot-out win.

South Melbourne were quick to remind everyone he was on their books as a youngster after the match, receiving lots of interaction from Celtic supporters.

South Melbourne have been playing up their Celtic links all season, capturing attention and buzz from a Bhoys support that is intent on celebrating the life and career of Postecoglou.

The Australian club even held a celebratory Celtic night last week, allowing any supporters wearing Celtic merchandise into one of their matches for nothing.

It resulted in wonderful scenes as supporters invaded the ground, cheered on a win and sang songs in honour of the Bhoys boss himself.

If nothing else, it’s a smart marketing strategy from South Melbourne!

The links between Australia and Scottish football have been fantastic to see all season, not least for us here at 67 Hail Hail where the Aussie bloc has become an important and valued member of our audience.

We’d be lying if we said we didn’t enjoy Hrustic sticking away his penalty last night and the fact he has passed through South Melbourne, where Postecoglou was a massive figure, makes it all the sweeter!
