Fraser Forster reckons Celtic would do well in England

Fraser Forster reckons Celtic could compete easily in the riches of the English Premier League.

The keeper, on loan from Southampton, has clearly been impressed with his new side since signing in August. Forster has been part of a Hoops defence that has shipped just two goals in four games, but he doesn’t think the quality of the squad is limited to just the backline.

He told the Scottish Sun: “It’s hard when you compare north and south of the border. But I think we’d do alright in England.

“Looking at what we’ve got in the dressing room there’s no reason why we wouldn’t have a comfortable season in the Premier League.

“I definitely don’t see this as being a step down or backwards.

“Ultimately, I’ve come here to win trophies and compete at the top of the league — and not many get to do that.”

Forster makes a nice point, but it’s pretty irrelevant

The debate over how Celtic would fare in England is probably the most tedious of all time. English football fans constantly belittle us by suggesting that we would be nothing more than relegation fodder, or even a lower-league team.

The truth is that nobody really knows, and it doesn’t really matter anyway. The only way we’ll ever get a gauge is when we face English sides in European football. That could still happen in the Europa League this season should we make it to the last 32 – and most Celtic fans would relish the opportunity.

We’ve already shown on matchday one that we could cope with one of the leading teams in France. We have players in our squad who would walk into a lot of top-flight English sides too. The likes of Odsonne Edouard and Callum McGregor will go for big money when they move on, and probably even bigger money after that.

It’s encouraging to see that Forster is enjoying his football though. The Englishman has been a big part of our recent turnaround and he looks like he’s getting better with every passing game.
