Former Celtic goalkeeper Fraser Forster is set to return to the Champions League next week.

His side Tottenham Hotspur will take on Italian giants AC Milan in their last 16, first leg on Tuesday.

Forster has been used to a watching brief at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium since signing for the club in June, but his big opportunity is about to arrive.

Usual Spurs no.1 Hugo Lloris sustained a knee injury in the 1-0 win over Manchester City on Sunday, and although he played the full match, ESPN are reporting he’s set to miss at least six weeks.

That means that Forster, who’s played in Spurs’ two FA Cup ties so far, is set for a big night. It’ll be the first time he’s played in the Champions League since his first spell at Celtic, almost a decade ago.

Of course, playing at the San Siro will be nothing the Englishman hasn’t done before. He played there for Celtic in our 2-0 loss to AC Milan back in 2013.

He’s also thwarted the likes of Barcelona and Benfica in years gone by, and seems to enjoy the big occasions.

Despite Forster getting a big break that he’s earned, you can’t help the feeling that he’d have had more big nights under the lights at Celtic.

Since he departed the Champions League scene, Celtic have been back dining at European football’s top table on three occasions – most recently this season.

There must have been an element of jealousy from the big keeper while watching his good mate Joe Hart take on the likes of Real Madrid and RB Leipzig.

Of course, more Champions League football is on offer for Hart and Celtic next season, should we win the Premiership title.

Maybe we’ll see Forster back at Celtic Park under the bright lights one day in the future.
