Celtic have today suffered a frustrating blow in our bid to solve the right-back position, with Rennes’ Sacha Boey not interested in a move to Parkhead according to L’Equipe.
Boey was one of several potential contenders Celtic were said to be looking at. This was along with Rennes’ other right-back Brandon Soppy [Le Parisien].
However, Celtic are said to have offered Boey a contract that has since been turned down. L’Equipe believe this to be down to the presence of potential an English agent.
Boey spent last season on loan with Dijon and bagged 24 appearances [Transfermarkt]. However, he only has 12 outings with Rennes to name in total.
Soppy, one of Celtic’s other reported targets, is currently ahead of Boey in the Rennes’ pecking order.
Sacha Boey to Celtic being off is hardly the end of the world
In truth, Celtic fans will likely want a more experienced head in at right-back. Not a player who has only had a handful of appearances to his name.
If we’re going to be delving into the young pool, we could do with a player more highly-rated. That’s what makes Soppy a potentially more attractive buy. He’s ahead of Boey in the Rennes ranks and is available this summer
What’s important from Ange Postecoglou’s perspective is that the right deal is made. There were so many question marks that potentially hung over Boey. You could argue the same of Soppy too, but he would certainly arrive with more of a reputation.

Celtic have also been linked with Sheffield United right-back George Baldock. However, there doesn’t appear to be much progress on that front either.
The Hoops are now going to have to power through their UCL second qualifying round tie vs Midtjylland without a reliable right-back. We can’t have the same happening should we squeeze through.
But for now, it looks as though we can cross Boey off the list. Next please.
