We’ve had the hysteria of Brexit dominate news over the past year or so, but just as it cools down an equally damaging break-up could soon occur at Celtic.
Tom Rogic’s Exit – or Trexit as it probably won’t be called – may be on the agenda this summer, especially after the latest comments made by Rene Meulensteen about the Celtic attacker.
The Australia national team’s assistant boss was in Scotland on Wednesday night to watch Rogic net a crucial equaliser in our 2-2 draw at Livingston.
Meulensteen only saw his man in action for 22 minutes, given Rogic’s lack of playing time at present.
And that’s something the Aussie coach reckons may have to change in the near future.
“Tommy shouldn’t be on the bench,” he told the Scottish Sun on Thursday.
“He’s a player who should play every week.
“It’s not my decision to make but it’s a shame for us, as we want all our top players to play as much football as possible.
“Maybe come the summer, there might be a move for him coming up. I’m sure there are clubs looking at him.
“Celtic are a great club and Tommy always speaks with such passion about them.
“But sometimes things move in a different way and I think if he doesn’t get regular football, he probably needs to look elsewhere.”
Meulensteen is just looking out for Rogic and his country
Meulensteen isn’t actually saying anything too drastic, despite the tabloid headlines virtually suggesting that he’s about to pay Rogic’s fee to move to a new club.
He’s just looking out for one of his country’s top talents, which is hardly surprising given he’s the assistant manager.
Rogic probably shouldn’t be on the bench. If you’d have suggested this would be the case a mere two years ago you’d have been laughed out of town.
The Aussie was perhaps our star player in the second of our treble winning seasons – and also scored the famous goal that clinched the ‘Invincible’ season.
But his recent form, and the emergence of Ryan Christie, has hampered his chances while Olivier Ntcham’s improvement has also not done Rogic any favours.
The words of his international coach are likely to ring loud in his mind. Can he continue to play at Celtic as second fiddle to other, more favoured stars?
With Rogic contracted until 2023 – by which time he’ll be 30 – he may feel he has to evaluate things this summer.
Otherwise he could remain in the Celtic rut he has been in for what seems like an eternity.
