Fresh timeline provided for Leigh Griffiths' Celtic return
Ange Postecoglou has stated that Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths will return to training later this week.
Griffiths has yet to play a single minute of competitive action for the football club this summer. Injury woes have led to him missing games against Midtjylland and Hearts respectively.
Celtic have had to rely on Odsonne Edouard to carry the burden. With Albian Ajeti clearly not entrusted by Postecoglou to make an impact, there remains a dearth of impact-making centre-forwards at the club.
However, the Hoops boss has confirmed that Griffiths will make his return to training later this week:
Leigh Griffiths’ return to Celtic action appears to be sooner rather than later
If we’re talking about footballing ability alone, this is a boost for Postecoglou with regards to his selection issues. It all depends on whether he sees Griffiths as having a future with the club.
Something certainly needs to be done with the centre-forward position. Odsonne Edouard remains too much of a guaranteed starter at the moment. Unfairly so too.
The sale of Patryk Klimala has left us short in the striking department. Especially if Kyogo Furuhashi is going to be spending much of his time operating off the left flank.
Griffiths’s return won’t be universally loved. But in terms of sheer options, it’s a boost for the manager.
It will be interesting to see whether Postecoglou goes with a two-striker system once he gets players fit. Chance creation hasn’t been a huge problem in recent weeks, but a lack of a cutting edge has been.
Griffiths has been given so many chances at this football club that you can’t hang your hat on him. The manager will be well briefed on that too. But if it gives him another option going forward, he’s in a position where he has to take it.
A return against Dundee on Sunday in the Premiership has yet to be ruled out.
