Former Celtic defender Gary Gillespie has admitted that matters off the pitch affected the club during his spell in Glasgow.
Former Liverpool defender Gillespie was at Celtic between 1991 and 1994, and in that time the club were in the middle of a slump on the pitch and had issues with the board off the pitch.
Gillespie has admitted that created a situation at the club that was not ‘easy’ to deal with.

“There was so much wrong at Celtic at the time I was there with (Former Hoops manager Liam) Brady” he told the Scottish Sun.
“Never an easy or healthy situation”
“There was a lot of boardroom activity going on and that’s never an easy or healthy situation to have going on behind the footballing side.”

It is probably difficult for younger fans to contemplate, but in the early 1990s Celtic were in the wilderness. They didn’t win a domestic trophy for six years, and were nowhere near making a challenge for the league title.
A difficult time on and off the pitch

It was a difficult time both on and off the pitch for the Hoops, and Gillespie was in the thick of it. He was trying to marshall a Hoops defence under rookie manager Liam Brady.
Unfortunately it didn’t end well for either party, as Brady lost his job in 1993 and Gillespie departed Celtic in 1994. However, the club are in a far better place these days, as they go for eight in a row.
However, it is always good to get a reminder of when times were bad, to ensure that the mistakes are never repeated.
