Celtic’s late penalty drama saved the day for the Bhoys at Ibrox after John Beaton’s VAR penalty check rescued a point for Martin O’Neill’s side.

Beaton is no stranger to controversy in Glasgow Derby fixtures and when he awarded Celtic’s late penalty, the commentary team of Gerry McCulloch and Peter Grant made the wait for the award a little less painful.

As Beaton checked the VAR monitor, Grant exclaimed ‘oh yes!’ when he saw the handball as McCulloch said Dujon Sterling directed the ball onto Jack Butland’s ‘coupon’ in an excellent two-way Celtic exchange.

Ally McCoist’s tears over Celtic’s penalty are brilliant.

What is he talking about??

John Beaton ‘looking for an angle’ to deny Celtic’s penalty in hilarious commentary jibe

And as Hoops fans waited an agonisingly long time for Beaton to award the penalty, McCulloch and Grant’s commentary on Celtic TV was comedy gold.

McCulloch: “The referee’s having a look with Stevie McLean, I think on VAR.”

Grant: “It’s his left arm, isn’t it? I never saw that, to be fair. If you see it here, maybe better. Oh yes, yeah, that’s a penalty kick.”

McCulloch: “It’s redirecting. Oh, it’s a penalty kick into Jack Butland off the arm of Sterling. So that should be a penalty to Celtic in the 88th minute. Come on, John Beaton, you know what you want to do.”

Grant: “He actually directs it onto Jack Butland’s face.”

McCulloch: “Yeah, he does, directs it right onto his coupon.”

Grant: “How many times you need to see it? It’s fact, the ball goes into the net. If you see it from the other side, the ball’s going into the net.”

McCulloch: “They’re trying to find an angle where it doesn’t happen.”

Grant: “Yeah.”

It was a great piece of Celtic fan-biased commentary that needs to happen more on the channel.

John Beaton’s Celtic record after Rangers controversy

Beaton has now refereed 64 games involving Celtic during his career as an SFA accredited whistler.

Here is how his Celtic stats break down:

Celtic’s winning record under John Beaton

Celtic’s record under the controversial referee is not too bad, but that’s hardly surprising considering the Parkhead club’s 25-year domination of Scottish football.
