Gillingham boss confirms Celtic interest in Joe Walsh
Gillingham boss Steve Evans says Celtic have been to have a look at his young goalkeeper Joe Walsh.
The 17-year-old is yet to make the goalkeeper’s jersey his own for the mid-table League One side. He has, however, caught the eye of a number of high-profile clubs according to Celtic-mad Evans.
“Some of these big clubs will be looking and thinking, because of the homegrown rule as well, they need homegrown players. He is a big asset to us,” the Scottish boss told Kent Online.
“We know the people that are coming, it’s not made up. Celtic have been here, Everton have been here, overseas clubs, a couple of German clubs saying they are looking at our young goalkeeper.
“But there is a difference between looking and being prepared to come back and buy someone.”
Celtic move for Walsh is an intriguing one
Earlier this week, English site Football League World reported that Neil Lennon’s men and Everton were in a race to sign the highly rated teenager. They said that the fact the youngster had already appeared for the Gillingham first-team, in some EFL Trophy matches, had alerted several clubs to his vast potential.
Not a great else is known about our reported interest but the reports have now been substantiated by Evans who is always pretty open when talking in the media.
A move for Walsh wouldn’t exactly signal that he’s going to feature for us next season or anything, but it’s still interesting nonetheless. We have a couple of aspiring goalkeepers in our ranks at present with Conor Hazard and Ross Doohan both enjoying loans spells away from the club in recent years.
A move to sign another highly-rated shot-stopper would perhaps indicate that we don’t feel either are going to be up to the challenge of cementing a first-team place in the coming years.
But as all the goalkeeper signing chat revolves around Fraser Forster between now and the end of the season, just keep an eye out for Joe Walsh’s name. It may pop up some time very soon.
