Giorgos Giakoumakis’ Celtic injury knock explained after making it through Dundee clash

Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou has explained the injury picked up by Giorgos Giakoumakis after he picked up a knee knock against Dundee.

The Greek striker came on from the bench at Dens Park in the final game before the international break. Giakoumakis struggled to make much of an impact, missing 2 big chances in a disappointing outing for him.

However, as it turns out, the former AEK Athens striker actually picked up an injury setback during the game. Postecoglou has revealed that the player will be out for another week after playing through the pain barrier at Dens Park.

Speaking at his pre-St Johnstone press conference today via Celtic TV, Ange said: “Giakoumakis got a knock on his knee in the Dundee game. He played on but he just wasn’t feeling right afterwards.

“We got it checked out and it’s nothing serious. But it’s put him out probably for a couple of weeks.

“We’ve already sort of had a week of that so hopefully he’s not too far away.”

When Giorgos Giakoumakis is likely to return for Celtic

Judging by Ange’s timeline here, a return for the big Greek could come next weekend when we host Aberdeen at Celtic Park.

That would certainly be an ideal fixture for him to make his mark in. Especially given his recent penalty miss at Parkhead against Livingston – the moment that continues to set him back in a Celtic jersey.

This latest injury blow is more of an inconvenience for him than anything too devastating. Fans are already irked with some of his recent misses. Spending more time on the sidelines given how long it took him to get up to speed in the first place won’t help his relationship with the fans.

But it’s extremely early days. The next goal he scores will see an end to all frustrations, both from the player and the support. If he nets next weekend against the Dons, nobody will be talking about his penalty miss vs Livi. Nobody will be discussing his misfiring at Dens Park.

So it’s important for now that Giakoumakis rests up and uses the next week to get himself back to 100%. You still feel we haven’t seen anywhere near the levels he’s capable of. There’s a player in there, and one that will offer Celtic a different option in time.

Here’s hoping he starts showing that sooner rather than later.
