Celtic striker Giorgos Giakoumakis has defended his February comments that claimed the Hoops were stronger than Rangers.

The remarks sparked controversy at the time with the Hoops leading the title-race by only 3 points [Clyde 1]. However, victory at Ibrox followed en route to a sensational league championship that proved Giakoumakis right.

It also left Ryan Jack hilariously raging as he slammed Giak for being “disrespectful” [Daily Record]. However, the Greek international has been proven spot on after the Hoops secured 2 of the 3 domestic trophies on offer this season.

He’s been speaking about the remarks once again, and as he reflected on them the big forward was certainly in no mood to take anything back.

As quoted by the Daily Record, he said: “It’s a big satisfaction for me. Just to be clear, I did not want at any time to offend anyone. I didn’t want to have a fight with someone or say something spicy.

“I just said what I was thinking about my team and tried to be honest. Thank God we are the winners! It’s something I expected to happen because we have played the best football in the league, in most of the games. So now we can enjoy what we did over this year.”

Ange Postecoglou was quick to back Giorgos Giakoumakis after Celtic/Rangers remarks

It was quite laughable how these comments were perceived as if they shouldn’t have been said. All we had here was a player opening up and speaking his mind. That the likes of Jack and many in the Rangers support couldn’t take it says a lot about their appointment.

Ange Postecoglou, of course, was quick to defend the player. He stated that he encourages his stars to speak their mind and no wonder. It’s not as if this was ever going to be a season in which what rival players say would prove to be some sort of major motivation.

The main carrot was big enough. We knew that if we won the league this year then we had automatic entry into the UCL. It was absolutely massive and the players will have known that. To say that Giakoumakis had provided Rangers with an incentive was laughable stuff.

Regardless, he’s been proven spot on. Rangers couldn’t lift themselves anymore as Celtic went unbeaten in the final 2 league games against them. Giakoumakis’ comments didn’t inject anything within them.

Sure, if we had lost the league from that moment onward then these comments would’ve been perceived differently. But the fact is it wouldn’t have been down to those remarks alone. It would’ve been down to our own failure when it came to getting the job done.

Thankfully, that didn’t happen. As supporters, we would certainly welcome a bit more of this from Celtic players. It adds to the game.
