Giorgos Giakoumakis discloses his big Celtic target for 2022
Celtic striker Giorgos Giakoumakis has stated that one of his big targets in 2022 is to score a “lot more” goals for the Hoops.
Giakoumakis is undergoing a terrific revival in the early stages of the year. A struggling first 5 months in Scotland in which he only bagged 1 goal and was plagued with injury woes set him back massively. However, he’s shown immense character to bounce back and score 6 goals since the turn of the year.
The big Greek really announced himself to the Celtic supporters on Sunday when he bagged a hat-trick against Dundee. It secured a crucial 3 points in the title race and extended our lead at to the top over Rangers to 3 points.
And as we look to kick on ahead of an intense title run-in, the former VVV-Venlo star has outlined goals as his main focus.
As quoted by the Scottish Sun, Giakoumakis said: “Everyone criticises a striker if he doesn’t score goals — so it’s something which makes me very happy whenever I score. It’s something that makes me really pleased. But for me it’s not the only thing I have to do on the field.
“It’s part of my performance, but whenever I score and have a good performance then I feel my play is complete, and it makes me even more happy. I know everyone is criticising a striker for his lack of goals. When you are a forward goals are your fuel. Scoring makes me pleased with my game, and it’s something I hope I can do in every single match in order to help the team now.
“I feel I can score a lot more goals this season. That’s one of my targets right now, to score a lot more. My main ability is to score with one touch. But I try to improve every single bit of ability that I have. I always try to improve my touch and my dribbling. I try to score from every possible position because I am a striker and I can’t predict what situations will come in the game.”
Giorgos Giakoumakis has achieved his first big Celtic goal
When you’re a new player joining a new club, your first goal is always to establish yourself. You need to win the fans over and integrate into them a level of trust in your ability. Before Sunday, many still had real questions about what Giakoumakis was able to offer.
That’s now no longer the case. Not because of his hat-trick against Dundee alone. In all seriousness, that was just the finishing touch. He’d already impressed in big matches against the likes of Hearts and Rangers. He had already netted a few in 2022 before Sunday too. But we needed to see that he could be relied upon to produce goals in big moments exactly when we need him to.
Giakoumakis managed that against Dundee. He’s now a proven Celtic goalscorer and is by far the second-choice striker ahead of Daizen Maeda and Albian Ajeti respectively. That’s big for him considering where he’s come from after a tough first half of the year.
Next, he’ll want to go on a run of goalscoring form that shows he can produce goals on a consistent basis. If he can manage that, then he’ll be well on the road to becoming a successful Celtic centre-forward.
That’s exactly what his main focus now will be on bolstering his goal record. He was the top scorer in the Eredivisie last season and that doesn’t happen if you can’t put your chances away on a regular basis. Giakoumakis has it in him.
And hopefully, his performance on Sunday will rocket him to new heights as he continues to progress nicely in 2022.
