Graham Potter gets rousing Celtic backing as Johan Mjallby questions Askou

Johan Mjallby has backed Graham Potter to be Celtic’s next manager.

Much of the talk in recent weeks has centred around Mjallby’s fellow Scandinavian centre-half, Jens Berthel Askou.

The Swede also knows Martin O’Neill well, having been part of that special team that reached the UEFA Cup Final in the early 2000s.

But Potter is currently the Sweden manager, and Mjallby has already seen enough to back him for the Parkhead hotseat.

Who would you prefer to become the next Celtic manager?

Asked about Askou on TNT Sports, Mjallby said: “He’s done a remarkable job with Motherwell this season, but is he a big name?

“He’s not a big name.”

“Right now, he’s in a quite nice environment, and he’s doing really well with limited resources at Motherwell. Yes, of course, they play great football.

“Can you do that at Celtic? I don’t know. Has he got the name for it? Has he won any medals? Celtic is a club, where if things aren’t going great for you, the pressure is there.

“So I can’t really say if Askou is the right guy. The way they play football? Yes. But is he mentally strong enough to take the Celtic job without being used to winning? I don’t know.

“But if it was Graham Potter, I would [go for] him. Because I don’t know if he’s interested in the Celtic job, but he’s a good name.”

Potter is back in Sweden after making his name there as a coach, taking minnows Ostersund from the fourth division to the Allsvenskan, winning the Swedish Cup on the way.

He also made an impact in Europe with the Swedish side, earning himself a move to Swansea in the Championship. After a year there, he moved to Brighton.

It was under Potter that Brighton evolved from a relegation-threatened Premier League side to top-half regulars.

But since then, things have taken a downwards turn.

Where did things go wrong for Celtic candidate Graham Potter?

Potter replaced the incredibly popular Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea, coming in as the first appointment of their new ownership under Clearlake Capital.

He lasted just 31 games, being dismissed after a 2-0 home defeat to Aston Villa.

His next move to West Ham was even more unsuccessful. Of 25 games in charge at the London Stadium, Potter won just six, and he was sacked amid a serious threat of relegation this season.

His move to Sweden was a surprise, and next month, they will compete in the play-offs to qualify for the World Cup. Should they fail, Potter could become available for Celtic.
