Celtic’s previous transfer saga involving John McGinn has become a popular what-if scenario after his move to Aston Villa back in 2018.

Despite various theories behind the switch that never was, Scotland international McGinn instead made his way to Villa Park and has since gone on to become club captain in the West Midlands.

While Celtic remain his boyhood side, the 30-year-old has made exactly 250 appearances for Aston Villa, registering 27 goals and 34 assists across all competitions.

Of course, some of the noise surrounding Celtic missing out on his services is a little over-dramatized by the Scottish media. The Bhoys were still very successful at the time, with quality in abundance across the engine room that helped them to win sweep every trophy during Brendan Rodgers’ first tenure.

Nevertheless, there is no doubt McGinn has evolved into a fine player for club and country and he has now answered the question on everyone’s lips.

Would John McGinn ever play for Celtic?

Speaking on the Scottish Football Social Club, McGinn admitted that he would never rule out the prospect of a move to his boyhood club in the future.

He stated when asked: “Great question, cheers for that! I wasn’t expecting that on a Monday night. You never say never, obviously when I was young, all I dreamed about was playing for Celtic.

“I didn’t ever see myself playing for Aston Villa, but life happens, football changes and I’ve got two and a half years left to go at Villa.

“Whether that sees me off or I’ve still got some left in the tank (it remains to be seen).”

Celtic and Aston Villa prepare to lock horns in January

McGinn may not have fulfilled his dream of playing for the Bhoys as of yet, but he will have the chance to play against his heroes when Celtic travel down to face Aston Villa in the Champions League come January.

It remains to be seen whether both sides will already have booked some form of qualification before the clash at Villa Park, which will see Scotland and England collide and create much intrigue.

In honest fashion, McGinn admitted he didn’t want to face Celtic due to the demand for tickets from family members, albeit his comment may have been in jest. Either way, there will be an intriguing dynamic in play on the night for the Scotland international.
