Greek charity Mission of Love have thanked Celtic striker Giorgos Giakoumakis for providing them with “very important” aid.

The Heraklion-based charity was built to help provide food and shelter to families struggling to survive in the city. Giakoumakis, meanwhile, grew up in Heraklion and has returned home during the off-season.

And it looks as though he’s lent a hand with Mission of Love stating that Giakoumakis has provided them with a “very important donation in order to cover the need for food”.

The operation thanked the player on their official Facebook page as they stated the following:

“Important help from afar!! A very important donation came to our team in order to cover the need for food.

“One of our own children, a Cretan boy who excels in international football, Giorgos Giakoumakis despite living in Scotland, found a way to support our effort. It should be said that George came out as top scorer for the second time and his team won the championship.

“We thank you for such an important contribution and are glad that the team’s ideology and yours are in line.”

Celtic striker Giorgos Giakoumakis not forgetting his roots

We all do whatever we can to help charities that are close to our hearts. However, it’s easier for certain players and superstars to forget their roots when they achieve a certain status of fame.

That certainly hasn’t been the case for Giakoumakis. His donation to Mission for Love comes hot on the heels of visiting his first football club and giving youngsters a pep talk. There’s a humility to this player that the Celtic supporters can relate to.

It’s great to see him make a gesture that reflects the club’s charitable ethos too. The Heraklion charity does tremendous work and appear to constantly be doing all they can to help families and children in the local area. It’s great to see Giakoumakis getting involved.

The Celtic hero appears to be spending his time back in his hometown getting involved with the local community this summer. And it’s fair to say he’s deserved a bit of respite given everything he’s done for the Celtic cause in 2022.

Giakoumakis has also been called up to the Greece squad for the upcoming June camp in which they’ll play 4 Nations League matches. A fitting way for him to round off the campaign.

But in the meantime, he’s been showing just what kind of man he is away from football too.
