Celtic left-back Greg Taylor might have identified a future Celtic captain after he made some interesting comments about centre-back Stephen Welsh.
Welsh is currently having a decent run in the Celtic side, partnering Kristoffer Ajer in the centre of defence. At just 21-years-old, Welsh is one of the younger players in the Celtic side.
However, you wouldn’t be able to tell that judging from Taylor’s comments. Indeed, his remarks make the centre-back sound like a future Celtic leader.
“Not a quiet lad”
“Welshy is not a quiet lad. Even at the start of the season. He leads and he talks. That is definitely beneficial for him and that is the reason he is doing so well at the moment” he said (Daily Record).
“It was difficult for him at the start of the season, as it was for us all during that period. But Welshy acquitted himself well in those games and ever since he has come back into the side he has been a breath of fresh air” Taylor concluded.
That is certainly some high praise from Taylor. The fact that Welsh seems to command respect from his teammates as such an early stage of his Celtic career is certainly promising.
Many people seem to expect who next captain will be
Now, it seems to be a foregone conclusion for a lot of people that Callum McGregor will be Celtic’s next captain when Scott Brown retires.
However, could in fact Welsh be Celtic’s next captain? It is not like Celtic haven’t had centre-back captains in the past. Billy McNeill and Stephen McManus spring immediately to mind.
Yes, it would be a gamble giving Welsh such a big responsibility at such a young age. However, it could turn out to be the making of the player. It is probably more likely that McGregor will be the next Celtic captain. But after reading Taylor’s comments, don’t rule out Welsh being Celtic captain one day.
