Gustaf Lagerbielke comments make one thing clear about his Celtic future

Gustaf Lagerbielke has struggled to nail down a starting berth at Celtic.

In fact, the Swedish defender failed to impose himself under Brendan Rodgers for even a spot on the bench at times before he left the club on loan.

Earlier this summer the 24-year-old moved to FC Twente in the Netherlands in an attempt to find regular first-team football, but even there he has found it hard to come by.

Lagerbielke has managed just six outings for the club with five of them coming from the bench and it has been a difficult period in his career.

The player does, however, remain confident in his own abilities following his £3million move to Glasgow last year, even if he has yet to show what he is capable of.

Even in the Eredivisie, where he continues to wait for his shot, the centre-half feels he can cut it and that manager Joseph Oosting may well still look to bring him in permanently beyond the loan.

Still, the former Elfsborg star is keeping his options open as a full-time, permanent switch might suit all parties.

“It is a straight loan until the summer”, he told Fotbollskanalen.

“Then there is always the possibility that I will be bought. So far it’s felt very good there so we’ll see how it goes forward.”

Lagerbielke remains under contract at Celtic until 2028 and that could potentially have some bearing on what comes next.

Whether it be negotiations over a fee between the clubs, there may yet be a lot to come in the future for the Swede in terms of figuring out his next steps.

And he has refused to rule out a return to Lennoxtown next summer at ‘fantastic’ Celtic, even if things have not worked out for him there quite yet.

“There is always that [chance of going back to Celtic].

“I still have a contract there. It’s not out of the question at all.

“Then I’ll have to see closer to the end of the season what happens with everything.

“But it’s a fantastic club.”
