Andrew Gutman won’t have to worry about playing international football this summer after he missed out on a spot in the United States squad for the Gold Cup.
Celtic’s January signing did make the original 40 man list but was one of 17 players culled by US coach Gregg Berhalter for his final squad. (Daily Record)

Gutman is currently playing in the USL Championship – the second tier of football in the USA – for Charlotte Independence. He’s made 13 appearances since the start of March and even netted a couple of goals. The left-back is expected to stay in his home country for the remainder of the league season.

The future
He will then return to Celtic and aim to make an impact on proceedings. From the outset, he couldn’t have joined the club at a better time. Celtic are short of options at left-back with Kieran Tierney and auxiliary full-back Jonny Hayes the only men likely to be competing with Gutman.

Of course Celtic could still add recruits this summer but the American must be fancying his chances of making an impression in Glasgow.
He clearly has pedigree too. Getting an international selection while playing in the second-tier of your country is no mean feat. Doing it in a top 25 ranked country as a 22-year-old is pretty spectacular.
Time will tell whether Gutman can be a hit at Celtic but for now the signs look good. He just has to get over the disappointment of not making it to the Gold Cup and get back to playing well for his club. If he can do that then all the other stuff will take care of itself.
