Celtic icon Chris Sutton has joined a rush of fans in reacting to comments made by Rangers striker Jermain Defoe.
The Ibrox player has failed to win a single trophy since making the move to Glasgow but, as reported by FootballFancast, thinks it’s only a matter of time before his club are back on top on in the Scottish Premiership.
Responding to a question on whether Rangers can win the title in the next couple of years, as quoted by the outlet, he said: “I said it when I signed, I believe it’s only a matter of time before it happens. Celtic fans give me a bit of banter about it on social media but I do genuinely believe it’s only a matter of time.”
With Celtic 13 points clear at the top of the table when football was suspended, romping to another league title, it doesn’t appear that Rangers are any closer to winning the trophy than in previous years.
Again, like last season, they completely fell away after the winter break, apparently not able to cope with the pressure of a sustained title race.
In one-off matches, they’ve performed better this season than in previous years but again it was Celtic who found a way to win the Scottish League Cup final in December.
Sutton responded to the comments on Twitter with a simple: “Here we go again.”
The former Hoops favourite perhaps sees another cycle of bluster and over-ambition emanating from the Ibrox ranks over the next months, as seems to happen every summer before the start of a new campaign.
Defoe’s comments also prompted a big reaction from supporters, many of whom are stunned to see that Rangers are suddenly feeling confident again simply because football is not being played.
