Celtic can defy history if they manage to turn things around and win the Scottish Premiership title this season.

The Hoops begin the final block of fixtures of the season this weekend with a visit to Dens Park to face Dundee and hopefully close the gap on league leaders Hearts.

Martin O’Neill’s side are five points adrift as it stands following the defeat to Dundee United before the international break and know that perfection will be required in order to retain their crown. But, with eight defeats to their name already, history could be made.

Celtic can create history if they win the league

No side in Scottish Premiership history has won the title with eight or more defeats in a league season.

Title-winning sides in Scotland have historically relied on consistency, with most champions losing no more than four league matches across a season. Even in tighter campaigns, that figure has rarely stretched beyond five or six defeats over 38 games.

2 RangersRangers31 17 12 2 56 26 30 63
3 CelticCeltic31 19 4 8 56 34 22 61

No team in the modern Premiership era has come close to losing eight matches and still finishing top of the table. Celtic reaching that mark and lifting the trophy would set a new benchmark for resilience in a title-winning season.

Celtic’s big advantage in the title race

While it may seem like a tall order to win the league title, Celtic do have one advantage once the post-split fixtures are announced.

Both Hearts and Rangers will have to come to Parkhead after the Hoops made two visits during the regular league season.

Furthermore, the top two will also have to play each other, and a draw in that game, plus wins against them two would have the Hoops top of the table.

While it may be out of their hands, there is still a glimmer of hope.
