How Giorgos Giakoumakis feels about his concerning Celtic injury

Ange Postecoglou has today stated that Giorgos Giakoumakis doesn’t believe his Celtic injury blow is all that bad.

Giakoumakis had and still has Celtic supporters worried after appearing to hold his hamstring as he came off against St Johnstone on Saturday. The big striker was hooked almost immediately after firing Celtic 2-0 ahead on the day.

It’s left Celtic fans itching to know what’s going to happen up top for the Scottish Cup semi-final against Rangers. Giakoumakis will likely start if fit, whilst Kyogo is only just back from injury. Should the Greek striker be left out, it’s likely that Daizen Maeda will lead the line after an impressive individual showing against the Saints.

But as he provided a fresh update on Giakoumakis this afternoon, Ange did thankfully state that the player himself doesn’t believe it’s a bad one.

Speaking via Celtic TV, Ange said: “Nothing concrete yet. Again, we’re still waiting on the final scans on it. Hopefully it’s not too bad. He feels like it’s not too bad. But until we get the information we won’t know. Similar with David Turnbull, he obviously got a pretty hard knock.

“It’s only a couple of days after so we’ll see how it all settles down. With both, I’m hoping it’s not too lengthy an absence.”

No disaster if Giorgos Giakoumakis has to sit out Celtic vs Rangers

Would it be a blow if Giakoumakis misses Sunday? Yes. Would it be a spanner into Ange’s plans? Undoubtedly. Would it be a disaster? That would be going way over the top.

For as great as it would be to have the former VVV-Venlo man available, Celtic still have a reliable option there. Maeda showed against St Johnstone just how influential he can be through the middle.

Imagine him pressing and harrying the 2 Rangers centre-backs for 90 minutes. Chances are that pressure alone will lead to some big opportunities for Ange and the Bhoys. It’s not as if we would be replacing Giakoumakis with lesser quality either.

With Kyogo also available to come on from the bench if necessary, Celtic are stocked up in the final third. We have the quality to see the job through at Hampden whether Giorgos is fit or not.

Hopefully, of course, he battles through and manages to take a starting spot on Sunday. But unlike Rangers, we’ve shown we can do without one of our first-choice centre-forwards. Celtic have the depth to deal with it just like we did when Kyogo was out for 4 months.

The next few days will be crucial here, and it’s promising that the player himself isn’t feeling much pain. Fingers crossed then it leads to a swift return.
