Celtic captain Callum McGregor has provided an insight into how the dressing-room initially reacted to Ange Postecoglou’s appointment and the big impact he made upon his arrival.

Postecoglou was given the Celtic job despite being an unknown in Scottish football. The Greek-Australian had managed success both in Australia and Japan, but question marks hovered over whether that could be transferred to a club of Celtic’s size.

Yet fast forward just under a year and he’s delivered a domestic double, wrestled the title back from Rangers, and banked guaranteed Champions League football for the Hoops.

It’s an incredible job he’s done to revive what looked to be a club on its knees just a year ago. And reflecting on our title success in an interview with Sky Sports, McGregor said: “When we got the manager, he was relatively unknown at the time in terms of his work in Europe and what he was like. The guys quickly spoke to Tom (Rogic) and found out all about him. A couple of conversations with Tom and everyone was put at ease in terms of what he would bring and he’s been absolutely first class.

“Straight away you just get a great feeling from him, he had that authority, he spoke well and he had a caring nature as well in terms of he really wanted to help the players. He’s said it numerous times that he would take responsibility for the style of play and the way he wanted the team to function, so straight away the players feel at ease with that.

“He said all the right things and, especially at a club like Celtic, to want to play fast, attacking football that’s music to everyone’s ears. That’s what the supporters want to see and that’s what the players want to play. I think very quickly you saw all his sessions were high tempo and he just wanted the whole thing to be moving all the time. You could tell right away that’s the type of football he wanted to play and he was just a case of building from there.”

Ange Postecoglou made immediate impact on Celtic dressing room

Celtic fans were right to question the appointment at the time. It came after an absolutely disastrous pursuit of Eddie Howe whilst trust was already at an all-time low amongst the Parkhead support in their club.

However, the supporters were always going to give the new man a chance. Ange was never going to be tossed aside after a couple of poor results. Fans knew the importance of giving him an opportunity to impress, and they stood by him during a ropey start.

Let’s not forget the backing the supporters gave Ange despite a poor start to our league campaign. He was given the time needed to implement his playing style onto the players and it’s worked a treat.

And it’s clear just how impressed the Celtic squad was with his immediate impression too. He said all the right things and managed to get them on board immediately.

Had he failed to do so, that uncertain start could easily have gone on for longer. It was vital he managed to connect with the first-team squad early on, especially the senior players such as McGregor.

Now, we wait to see just what lies ahead for Celtic in year 2 of the Ange revolution. Excitement levels couldn’t be greater.
