Hugh Keevins has never been afraid to take aim at Celtic’s hierarchy, but his latest criticism of the club’s handling of Shaun Maloney and Mark Fotheringham’s contract situations feels difficult to argue against.
Even with reports now suggesting both men are set to remain at Celtic, the entire episode raised questions that should never have existed in the first place.
Now that Maloney and Fotheringham’s Celtic futures are in doubt, fans will be fuming that controversy around the two reverberates at a time when O’Neill should be planning for another title defence.
🔥 A fiery response from Brian Wilson to Hearts’ claims about Celtic…
Hugh Keevins has voiced what many Celtic supporters were already thinking about Celtic
Keevins delivered a remarkable assessment of the situation, pulling no punches as he questioned the thinking behind the contract saga.
He wrote in the Sunday Mail, “Celtic’s chief bean counter, finance director Chris McKay, might understand spreadsheets but he appears to have an impoverished grip on what makes a football team successful.
“Wiser heads in that regard should put him right before Celtic prove they specialise in self-harm and have a fatal fascination for proving they’re odd on a daily basis. They bailed Celtic out of serious trouble and camouflaged the chaos that was going on behind the scenes before they arrived.
“To break up that group of men on budgetary grounds, when you have as much money as Celtic have in their current account, is a dereliction of duty and a betrayal of the club’s support.
“It is an unnecessary controversy that has to be attended to as a matter of urgency by renewing the contracts of Maloney and Fotheringham on an appropriate level of recompense.
“The fans, whose contempt for the club’s directorate knows no bounds, must wonder what the hell is going on as Celtic prepare for the defence of their trophies.”
It will be hard to find many Celtic supporters disagreeing with every line of that criticism, but the central point is understandable. A situation involving valued Celtic coaching staff became a public issue when it could and arguably should have been resolved quietly.
Celtic’s success makes the contract stand-off difficult to justify
The concern only grew when reports emerged that wage-cut offers had been presented to Maloney and Fotheringham.
Football clubs constantly speak about building winning environments and maintaining standards. That becomes harder to explain when respected members of a successful coaching structure find themselves at the centre of uncertainty.
Continuity matters at Celtic. Successful teams are built on more than the players who take to the pitch every weekend. Coaches, analysts and support staff all contribute to creating an environment capable of delivering trophies.
Martin O’Neill’s reported Celtic stance says everything about Celtic continuity
Perhaps the most telling aspect of the story was the suggestion that Martin O’Neill is fighting to retain his staff.
Managers understand the value of trusted voices around them. Relationships built over months and years cannot easily be replaced, particularly at a club where expectations remain relentlessly high.
If O’Neill believes Maloney and Fotheringham are important parts of his operation, that alone should have carried significant weight.
The latest Celtic update does not remove the bigger question
The good news for Celtic is that the latest reports indicate both coaches want to remain at the club.
That would represent the right outcome and one supporters will welcome. Yet Keevins is correct when he describes the matter as an unnecessary controversy.
With Celtic yet to have reached a sensible conclusion, supporters are entitled to ask why the situation was allowed to escalate to this point in the first place.
Keeping Maloney and Fotheringham is the correct decision. The real lesson is that there was never any obvious reason for their futures to become a public debate at all.
