Celtic midfielder, Hyeokkyu Kwon, has shared what the club said to him about the loan move to Hibs this summer.

The South Korean joined Celtic last summer and is yet to make a single first-team appearance for the club.

Spending the final few months of last season on loan at St Mirren, Kwon impressed the Paisley club’s fans and Stephen Robinson who described his nine-game stint at the SMISA Stadium as ‘fantastic’.

Now at Hibs on loan, the Celtic midfielder is already impressing behind the scenes and here, he shares what Celtic told him about the loan move to the capital.

Kwon told to get up to speed on Scottish football

At 23, Hyeokkyu Kwon still has plenty of time to make a name for himself at Celtic. Vying for a first-team spot behind Callum McGregor was always going to make his time in Paradise challenging.

But it seems that he may still have a future at Celtic Park after what the club told him to do whilst on loan at Hibs.

Kwon told the Edinburgh Evening News [print edition page 48], “I haven’t been here very long. There are other new signings.

“We are still getting used to playing with each other on the training ground, as well as in games.

“I am sure that, once we get a better understanding of playing together, we can be successful. There are good players here. I see that every day. And it is a good team.

Celtic have told me that they want me to come here and get experience of the Scottish game. That is my aim.

“Every day, I am working very hard to improve as a player. And to understand what the manager wants from me.”

Kwon’s ‘long-term’ plan after watching Celtic inspirations

Kwon has also detailed where he sees his long-term plans and has highlighted playing in Europe and for his country after being inspired by two former Celtic stars.

The 23-year-old continued, “My long-term aim is to play in European competitions because I used to watch Ki Sung-Yueng and Cha Du-ri play for Celtic. I would watch them on television and be inspired.

“I also have international ambitions. To play for my country would be the finest honour.

“I think Hibs can help me to achieve that. But only if I play well here – and help the team to achieve success.”

Whether or not Kwon can make it at Celtic remains to be seen. The only glimmer of hope that can be offered to him is that Callum McGregor spent some time on loan before returning to Celtic to become a stalwart for the club.

And whilst there is no suggestion that Kwon is of the calibre of McGregor, the point is that if he works hard and improves his game then a Celtic future could be there for him.

But for now, the South Korean will be focused on making his debut for Hibs as he gets up to speed with his fitness, which could come this weekend in the away fixture to Kilmarnock on Sunday.
