Hyunjun Yang was Celtic’s hero in the win over Motherwell on Saturday but had the winger got his transfer move last summer, it could have been a very different story for Martin O’Neill’s side.
Yang was on the brink of a Celtic exit to Birmingham City before the plug was pulled at the very last minute by the Parkhead club.
And opening up after Celtic’s win over Motherwell, where Yang scored a crucial double, the South Korean has spoken about the failed move and has explained why ‘it doesn’t matter anymore’.

How good has Yang been this past month?
Hyunjun Yang admits Celtic exit was ‘very close’
Sometimes a failed transfer move can be enough to dishearten a player and affect form. But not for Yang. The Celtic winger has been in great form this season as he puts the transfer row behind him.
Yang told The Celtic Way, “It’s true, I was very close to leaving – but it doesn’t matter any more.
“The transfer window is something every player needs to go through. Just because that move did not happen doesn’t mean I was sad about it.
“It just motivated me to practise and prepare even harder here. I think you can see that in the games and in my performances.”
Hyunjun Yang is now ‘very happy’ at Celtic
While Yang says he is motivated to do better, Celtic fans will be delighted to hear that the winger is over the moon to still be in Paradise.
“I am very happy”, continued Yang, “All I want to do is focus on the team and trying to win every game.
“That’s what I have been doing and will continue to do. This is my third season here. The first two seasons were hard, maybe I didn’t play as much at times.
“But I feel it’s easier now. I am more confident with the language and I can communicate a lot better with staff and teammates. It has been very good.”
The fact that Yang has not downed tools and is willing to work even harder is paying dividends for Celtic as Yang continues his great form this season.
Will the South Korean eventually move on this summer? Based on his performances this season, many Celtic supporters will hope not.
