Former Celtic midfielder Alan Thompson has attempted to defend former teammate and coaching colleague Neil Lennon on Twitter tonight.

Thompson, who had a knack for performing well against Rangers, is speaking out following today’s disappointing 2-0 derby defeat at Celtic Park.

He said, across two posts on the social media site: “I blame Peter Lawwell. Do not blame Lenny! He’s doing his job to the best of his ability.”

This public defence of the manager hasn’t gone down particularly well with some supporters.

After being heavily backed in the summer transfer window, Lennon arguably has the best squad in the country at his disposal. The team should be performing far better than they’ve managed in the early stages of the season.

To blame Lawwell for the current ills feels wide of the mark.

The Chief Executive does have to shoulder responsibility for the overall direction of the club and, ultimately, the appointment of Lennon. However, it’s too early for that kind of post-mortem in my opinion.

Today’s defeat lies squarely at the feet of the manager and his players.

Thompson is never going to slate Lennon given their relationship and history, but surely even he sees that the flak today is mostly deserved?

It’s a curious outburst, to say the least.

In other news, Lennon’s post-match interview has gone down poorly with Celtic supporters.
