Paul Lambert has hammered the performance of Rangers against Celtic on Wednesday night and thinks Ange Postecoglou’s Bhoys are well on their way to a league title.

Nobody at the Bhoys is getting too excited in the wake of the big derby win. In fact, Postecoglou and captain Callum McGregor have gone out of their way to remind everyone nothing has been won yet.

I’ve seen that sentiment echoed throughout the support too. No one is under any illusions there are many tough battles ahead, starting today against Motherwell.

Former Celtic captain makes big title prediction

Lambert, though, is bullish about the Bhoys’ ambitions.

Speaking to The Sunday Post [06/02 print edition, Post Match supplement page 2], the former club captain said: “In all my years watching and playing in Old Firm games, I can’t remember seeing one where the Rangers side didn’t do a single positive thing, until this week.

“The first rule is to stamp your authority on the game, as individuals and as a team. Everything Celtic did was quick and urgent, while Rangers just kept backing off them – and eight of those Celtic players were making their first appearance in the derby.

“Rangers looked like a small team. They were lightweight and lacking in physicality, and were a country mile off the pace.

“I can’t see Celtic losing the title now. If anything, they’re only going to get better when you think about the improvement Ange Postecoglou has overseen and the players due to come back in.”

With 14 games to go, we’re undoubtedly reaching the business end of the season. Postecoglou has spoken this week about ensuring his team peak at the end of the campaign.

If Celtic do continue to improve and impress even more, then Lambert’s prediction doesn’t look out of line at all.

But the Bhoys will be content to let pundits and supporters gloat and make the title calls.

The squad at Lennoxtown will be solely focused on one game at a time as the challenges on the park come thick and fast. As it should be.
